- Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are the gases that cause acid rain.
- In Pennsylvania, most of the sulfur dioxide comes from power plants that burn coal (the coal has a lot of sulfur in it). Nitrogen oxide comes from power plants too, but it mostly comes from other sources: cars, fertilizers used in farming, lightning, etc.
- Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide in the atmosphere mix with water to form different acids. The acids then mix in with rain, making acid rain.
